What is Clay?
Clay is a restaurant in Bluewaters Island, Dubai. Rectangle Interiors took it from concept design through construction, including the bar and the bespoke millwork. Design, fit-out and joinery were delivered by a single in-house team.

Clay sits on Bluewaters Island, a waterfront development where the competition for a customer's evening is immediate and visible. A venue there is judged from the promenade before anyone reads a menu.
The island's landlord requirements shaped the programme for the interior and the fit-out, with the millwork made in-house.
On a waterfront site the interior has to hold its own against what is outside it, so the room is planned to keep the outlook while still working after dark. Salt air also narrows the material choices on anything near an opening.
Finishes near the openings were specified for a waterfront position, where sun and salt do in one season what would take years indoors.
